Fish Population
Ashippun Lake Fish:
Largemouth bass
Northern Pike
Pan Fish - bluegill, yellow perch, crappie
Benjamin Heussner, fisheries biologist of the Wisconsin DNR-Waukesha County, spoke at an Ashippun Lake District commissioners meeting early in 2016. He reported on the health of our fish population. Heussner recommended a slot regulation where 12-18 inch bass and large Northern Pike are protected. This will help to balance the fish populations. Unfortunately, many of the larger fish that would normally feed on small pan fish have been fished out of Ashippun Lake. Because of the lack of predators, there is now an over population of pan fish in the lake. Mr. Heussner explained that this is a problem because pan fish feed on plankton, and the over abundance of pan fish is depleting the lake's plankton. If there aren't enough plankton in a lake, algae blooms become an issue and water quality declines.
